FEU Claim Second PFF Women’s Cup Title

Far Eastern University successfully defended the PFF Women’s Cup after defeating De La Salle University, 2-1, in the Final on Sunday morning at the historic Rizal Memorial Stadium

In the match that resumed in the 32nd minute after torrential rains flooded the pitch last week, the Lady Tamaraws, who showed their championship poise against La Salle, scored in either half to reclaim the title they won last year.

Tournament Most Valuable Player and FEU skipper Alesa Dolino broke the deadlock seconds right after the restart. The defender found enough space from outside to send to the cross bar and in to the back of the net. The 13-minute first half ended in favor of FEU, 1-0.

Tournament top scorer Barbie Sobredo doubled FEU’s lead in the 66th minute. From the FEU counter, Jovelle Sudaria sent a delicate pass in to the path of Sobredo, who slotted the ball past La Salle keeper Inna Palacios.

La Salle was able to pull one back four minutes later. Angel Metillo sent her free kick from 30 yards out past FEU stopper Joy Chavez to give life to the Lady Booters.

The scores could have been level in the 72nd minute. Dolino tackled Kyra Dimaandal inside the box but referee Clifford Daypuyat called a goal kick instead of a penalty.

Sudaria and Sobredo came close to making it 3-1, but she was frustrated by Palacios in the 80th and 84th minutes.

La Salle substitute Meryll Ledesma had the golden opportunity to force a late equalizer in added time, but her chance from outside sailed wide. The match finished at 2-1 and handed FEU the title.

This is FEU’s fifth championship after winning the UAAP title three times and the PFF Women’s Cup twice. — CAL
