Global Eye AFC Cup Zonal Semifinal First Leg Win

Global Cebu FC’s AFC Cup campaign shifts into higher gear as they take on Singaporean side Home United in the first leg of the ASEAN Zonal semifinals tonight at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

This is the first time that Global has advanced to the knockout stages after missing out in 2015. Global had a remarkable run in the group stages. The Dan Palami-backed squad won five out of six games, including a 3-2 shock home win over favorites Johor Darul Ta’zim, to finish on top of Group F.

The Zonal semifinals will be played over two legs with the second leg scheudled on May 31st at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore. A win tonight will see Global move a step closer to the Zonal final which will be held in August.

Assistant coach Marjo Allado has taken the interim role as head coach after Toshiaki Imai exited the club prior to the start of the PFL.

Allado is confident that Global can deliver the win over Home United, which currently sits in third place in the S.League.

“The focus here is to keep our mentality intact, keep on winning and get the first leg win at home,” said Allado. “It’s not an easy game for us, but we are used to playing games like these.”

Global will miss defender Wesley Dos Santos due to suspension. On the other hand, skipper Misagh Bahadoran is set to return to the squad after missing several matches due to injury.

The match kicks off at 7:30 PM and will be shown live on Fox Sports 1. Tickets will be available at the venue. — CAL
