Global Yields to JDT, Goes Down to Second in Group F

Global FC put up a spirited fight away from home but were unable to hold Johor Darul Ta’zim as the Malaysian side came away with a 4-0 win last night at the Larkin Stadium in Johor, Malaysia.

Two quickfire goals from Johor in the first half broke the backs of Global, who dropped points for the first time this season to go down to second place. JDT are now on top of Group F with seven points, one more than Global.

Johor took the lead in the 31st minute when Mahali Jasuli rifled a shot that ricocheted off the post and into the goal.

The hosts then made it 2-0 from the spot just three minutes later. Ahmad Bakri made a meal of Amani Aguinaldo’s shoulder challenge in the box, forcing the referee to point to the spot. Johor captain Safiq Rahim scored from the spot, sending the ball into the bottom left corner. Johor led at the half, 2-0.

Global put on a better second half, finding chances on goal and almost scoring. Substitute OJ Clarino came close in the 73rd minute but was denied by Izham Tarmizi. Shu Sasaki also had a golden opportunity in the 83rd minute from a back heel flick by Aguinaldo but Tarmizi made a good save on the one-on-one.

However, Johor would score two more goals in quick succession late in the match to complete the rout. Brian Ferreira dribbled past the Global defense and had a clean look in the 88th minute. Marcos Antonio added a fourth goal in the second minute of injury time with a bullet of a header from the free kick.

The two teams will meet again, this time at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, on April 5. — CAL
