LGR and the Azkals — A Local Partnership for the International Stage

LGR Athletic Wears Inc. Executive Vice President Rhayan Cruz is beyond excited to see his kits being worn by the Philippine National Team next Thursday night. The Azkals play against Bahrain’s National Team in their first match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Last night, LGR was announced as the official kit supplier of the Azkals. However, this is not the first time that the Manila-based sportswear brand is supplying the team with uniforms.

“Our partnership with the Azkals started in 2012 during the Philippines vs Malaysia friendly,” said Cruz. LGR also supplied the team kits during the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup where the Azkals finished third.

Cruz took the inspiration of the new Azkals kit from the Philippine flag with the three stars and sun as the focal point appearing at the back of the kit, and on the “Pinoy weave” in the front of the goalkeeper kit.

IMG_9909Now that LGR will be supplying the national team kit for the Azkals’ biggest tournament, Cruz hopes to be ready for anything that can happen for his company.

“The fans were caught by surprise, and even the company,” said Cruz. “Before, the attention was just only in (the National Capital Region), now we will have provincial and even international reach. We have to be ready for any situation.”

Cruz has already received positive remarks on the supplies that the Azkals have been using. The national team started using the training kits last Monday.

“Players are happy because before the training, they said that it was very light and it was nice,” added Cruz. “What’s more interesting is that the players have already made personal request for several items.”

Asked what will he feel when the Azkals don the kit at the Philippine Sports Stadium next week, Cruz simply states that he hopes he will not break down.

“On the first day I saw the team wear the kit, I was already in awe. What more at the game,” said Cruz. “I’m very proud of what we have provided, and we hope that everyone will be able to appreciate what we have done.” “Para sa bayan!” Cruz gamely says.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami stressed that it’s high time for the team to show to the world that “a Filipino brand can compete with the bigger brands internationally.”

“It’s important that the kits are made available,” said Palami. “Because the characteristics of the team is changing in every game with the new sets of players.”

The new Azkals kits will be available to the public starting today at the Bootcamp store in BGC (@BootcampFTBLSHP on Twitter). LGR (@LGRSportwear on Twitter) will also set up a booth in the Philippine Sports Stadium on June 11, 2015. — CAL
