Semifinal Spots Up for Grabs in PFF Women’s Cup

The race for semifinals spots intensified in last Sunday’s PFF Women’s Invitational Cup fixtures at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University both accomplished come from behind victories in the morning fixtures. The afternoon fixtures saw both Green Archers United and De La Salle University defeat their opponents with identical 3-0 wins.

In a positive move by the organizers, Alberto Honasan and Ariel Serrantes were named match commissioners for the day. Honasan handled the morning fixtures while Serrantes took over in the afternoon fixtures. The pair replaced Aging Rubio, who coached UST in Sunday’s first match.

UST dusted off their poor start to win 3-1 over University of the Philippines-X in the 8 AM kick off. Mary Rose Obra handed UP-X the lead in the 12th minute. However, UST took the lead at the end of the half when Nina Acuñas scored with a chipped effort in the 25th minute. Charisa Lemoran made it 2-1 just five minutes later. Chandra Solite added an insurance goal in the 64th minute to claim the win for UST.

In the second match, Ateneo rallied in the second half to defeat Sikat FC, 2-1. Lea Tanton put Sikat ahead from a free kick in the 16th minute. But Teresa Bernardo equalized in the 53rd minute off the counter and Martie Bautista completed the comeback with the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute from a counter-attack.

Green Archers United forward Marianne Narciso fired a hat-trick to lift her team past UP-Y in the 2 PM game. Narciso caught UP goalkeeper Maria Wong off her line three times and found the back of the net in the 17th, 22nd, and 26th minutes.

DLSU edged Lady Tamaraws FC in the day’s last match. Kyra Dimaandal (39′), Meryll Ledesma (56′), and Chelo Hodges (79′) all found the back of the net for the Taft-based side. La Salle’s Irish Navaja provided the assists for all three goals.

The final week of the PFF Women’s Invitational Cup Group Stage is scheduled on Sunday, September 6, 2015. Venue will be announced within the week. — CAL
